OAK BROOK RESIDENCE
House Beautiful

This suburban Chicago residence in a heavily wooded setting opens outward through corner glazing, asymmetrical massing, and oversailing eaves, to respond to the sun and surrounding views.

The home provides spaces for both gracious entertaining as well as intimate family life. Internal spaces freely communicate horizontally and vertically. The two-story entrance hall flows into the two-story living room with overlooking second-floor balconies. These more formal spaces are flanked by intimate family, den, dining, and living spaces. Large stone chimneys anchor the informal grouping of these spaces.

The spatial layering, fenestration, and built-in furnishings are carefully articulated through an extensive system of horizontal banding which reads from the interior through to the exterior. This detailing is used with numerous variations throughout, from the cherry trim, beveled glass, and granite accents on the interior, to the wrought-iron railing and sconces on the exterior.

Principal exterior materials are stucco, cedar, and Philadelphia bluestone.

The home won a "Divine Detail" award from the American Institute of Architects.
