Westhaven Park

Chicago, Illinois

The Residences at Westhaven Park is part of the comprehensive redevelopment of the Henry Horner Homes neighborhood. This 9-story building incorporates a mix of rent-assisted, affordable and market rate homes in a cohesively designed environment. The Westhaven Park Midrise includes 113 one and two bedroom units, designed with a comfortable, contemporary feel. All units are relatively spacious, and feature abundant natural light and outdoor terraces.

Our design for the Westhaven Park Midrise prominently features "green" architecture, including a dramatic planted cornice overhanging the entrance, and trellises above the upper balconies. Inspired by the Mayor's commitment to "green" design, this is among the first public buildings to incorporate living plants atop as a major architectural feature. Condensate runoff from rooftop condensers is used to help water the plants, along with collected rainwater and supplemental sources. This rooftop planting helps to naturally cool the building.

Abstracted green-stain cast-stone, loosely inspired by Wright's Midway Gardens, flanks the entrance and will be reminiscent of wall ivy (until actual ivy overtakes it).

Other key design features include: On-site management; 24 hour security; an exercise and fitness room; a social and meeting room; energy efficient design; recycling center; a planned community center; extensive ground landscaping; separate private storage areas for each home; private parking. The building is easily accessible to public transit and includes 142 enclosed and secured garage spaces. Parks, schools and social services are all nearby.

Cordogan, Clark and Associates worked closely with the Michaels/Brinshore development team, the Mayor's Office, and the CHA to create an innovative design that will enhance people's lives and the surrounding neighborhood fabric. Westhaven represents our ongoing commitment to highest-quality affordable housing design.
