RESIDENTIAL

Affordable Housing

Chicago, Illinois

This proposal for the Chicago's affordable housing rethinks Chicago's housing situation and its needs. It is designed for a new era of Chicago living.

The row houses, townhouses and apartments proposed in this project are similar in scale to single family homes to help establish a sense of place, or "defensible space". The residential environment is subdivided into zones over which residents can easily adopt proprietary attitudes. There is the sense that these zones, including the parkways, sidewalks, and open areas adjacent to the dwelling units, "belong" to the residents.

Unit layouts rely on the efficient use of space while incorporating programmatic spaces typically reserved for upper income residential units. Included are master bedroom suites, walk-in closets, formal dining rooms, washers, and dryers.

The exterior walls of these residences are designed to be entirely of pre-cast concrete construction. The advantages of this construction include durability; water, fire, and sound resistance; construction speed, efficiency and economy.
