West Suburban Bank of Aurora

Aurora, Illinois

This 40,000 square foot loan processing, administration, and banking facility also incorporates six drive-through banking lanes at ground level. The building plan is skewed on its site to allow sufficient width for the drive-through lanes while accommodating a banking hall at ground level. The building edges are reoriented towards the main street.

The core plan is quadripartite, with an inscribed circular-banking hall sandwiched between four-story atria entries. On the exterior, granite masses clearly express the core and base of the building; repetitive glazing at the main office areas; and pediment window walls and skylights rise over the two atria. The interplay of masonry and glass, mass and line heightens the expression of internal function and creates a strong play of volumes in light.

The design received an A.I.A. award for excellence in design.
