Illinois State
Toll Highway Pavilion

Aurora, Illinois

These familiar rest stops spread strategically throughout the Illinois Tollway are being transformed into modern and convenient mall-like facilities. Originally erected in the late 1950's, these facilities have served several generations of motorists on a 24-hour - 365 day basis.

The architecture of the new Over-The-Road Travel Pavilions creates a strong form suggesting a gateway that is easily recognizable from a distance. Generous glass areas facing the expressway highlight views of the activity within. They also bring exciting views of the expressway to the interior. The high interior volume and generous natural light create the feel of an open-air street market. Independent retail kiosks create a relaxed, festive and welcoming atmosphere. The concourse with its exposed trusses is reminiscent of great nineteenth century transportation halls-- updated for the new millennium.
